Low Folic Acid Diet

Some chemotherapy drugs require you to have a diet that is lower in Folic Acid than normal.  Here is a list of foods that are high in folic acid and should be avoided if you are prescribed one of these drugs.

Legumes:

  • Black, kidney, navy, or pinto beans
  • Black-eyed peas
  • Chickpeas (garbanzo beans)
  • Lentils
  • Peanuts

Grains:

  • Fortified breakfast cereal
  • Fortified oatmeal
  • Wheat Germ

Fruits:

  • Orange
  • Orange juice
  • Strawberries

Vegetables:

  • Asparagus
  • Avocado
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Broccoli or Cauliflower
  • Corn
  • Green peas
  • Okra
  • Spinach, Kale or other dark leafy vegetables

Meat:

  • Liver

Do not take vitamins or supplements that contain folic acid:

  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Multiple vitamins
  • Folic acid supplements
